We are all about Reading for Week 4 of Summer Activities Month. Always searching for ideas on how to get our kids to WANT to read this summer (and beyond), we looked to The Brooklyn Public Library and Powell's Books for tips. At the top of list, set an example. "Monkey see, Monkey do" say Alexis + Sarah from Powell's. "Parents who read for pleasure set the best example!" Make reading a family affair and start an "Everybody Reads Hour", take family trips to the library, have older children read to little ones and pick out a chapter book to read as a family. Talk about your books at the dinner table or in the car. And, both echoed the importance of letting kids choose their own books. "Guide, don't decide." Encourage a mix of books, such as nonfiction about your vacation. We love the idea of a special reading spot. Alexis' tip: "Let everyone pick a special chair, pillow or spot in the yard to read and provide a simple snack." Lastly, while reading charts and other incentives can be good, "talking about what you've read will make a more lasting impression." We are inspired! For more tips, see our blog. SHOP ALL BOOKS >
