As a recent recipient of Red Tricycle’s 2013 Totally Awesome Awards for Kids Bedding, Bridget Kelly, founder of The Little Acorn, will tell you “Kids inspire me!” Best known for her colorful wall art and whimsical children’s bedding collection, Bridget developed her flair for kid-friendly designs from 20 years of experience at Pottery Barn Kids, Mattel, and Nike. With a mix of children favorites, including funny friends, cute critters, and fanciful fairies, it’s no wonder she chose “grow up happy” as the company motto. We asked Bridget to tell us more about forest animals, her extended family, and what’s on her holiday list.
What is your business?
My business is The Little Acorn and our motto is “Grow Up Happy”. I design baby and kids products that are functional for kids rooms and lifestyles. A parent could complete their baby’s nursery using my products, which includes handmade baby bedding, quilts, wall art, hand tufted natural rugs, blankets, bath hoodies, decorative pillows, and and so much more.
Advice on creating a balance personal and professional life.
It is a difficult to start your own business, and start a family. I spend as much time as I can with my extended family so my sister and brothers share their kids with me. It’s so much fun! I just try to have as much silliness as possible when I’m with them because they get enough seriousness in life.
Favorite trends this season.
My favorite trends are foxes and owls, woodland creatures have always been inspiring to me! My painting The Wishing Tree, featuring forest animals, has been our best seller. If I could make it happen, we would have the Christmas Fox who delivers tasty treats for our little sweet tooths during the Christmas holidays!
What's on the children's wish list?
My niece wants anything with mermaids, it’s been that way for two years now. I’m running out of material, so I did a painting for her and she has it hanging over her bed. I am always asked to make up stories about mermaids. Recently, I told one about mermaids who came from outer space, and she loved that one… maybe I should make it into a movie!
A holiday tradition.
We always have Christmas stockings in our family, it is my favorite because the gifts can be tiny, as well as silly and fun. As a child, some of my favorite holiday things came in a stocking!
