Founded by Peter and Annie Cormack, a Scottish couple who immigrated to Canada in the early 1900s, Herschel was named for the frontier town that became the duo's New World digs. A barrel maker by trade, Peter quickly found fortune with his Herschel Supply Co., a dry goods outfit that catered to the area's homesteaders. To this day, tiny Herschel (pop. 30) remains the headquarters of the family-run company, now better known for its bags than its barrels.
